Do you set catalogs, price lists, or other long publications using Excel files as your source material? Want to use Excel data but don't want the problems? Get rid of those hassles! Here is relief! Our Spreadsheet Power Importer application, SPIP, lets you format any Excel file right inside SPIP for instant use in Pagemaker or Quark. You don't need to know Excel. SPIP does all this without having to manipulate an Excel file directly.

SPIP is
EXTREMELY EASY to use. All you need is a header for each column — or just use the contents of the first cell. SPIP shows you that first cell content for each column. Set the style and color for the header in SPIP, and SPIP applies it to the entire column. Then save the file as an RTF file (Rich Text filter which ends in .rtf), and import it into Pagemaker or Quark. Pagemaker and Quark (and any other program whch can use RTF files) will retain the styles and colors, and then you can do your work more easily.
- Re-ordering column positions
- Grouping data from several columns into one and adding punctuation and/or spaces between them. No more tedious cut and paste
- Sets styles, colors, fonts, and sizes — for final use or for changing later
- Indentation control
- Sorting of columns (change the order of column contents)
- SPIP CAN replace a tab with a hard carriage return!
- Column header renaming
- SPIP is a HIGH PRODUCTIVITY tool. Saves your wrists and elbows too!
If you apply a font, text color or other style to a column in SPIP, you can do a "Search and Replace" in Pagemaker and instantly change every instance of it to any other color or style in your Story Editor. Set your tabs in Pagemaker, and they will replace the tabs from the Excel file. Or get rid of those tabs entirely! SPIP can throw away tabs, and can even replace them with a comma or symbol. Don't spend hours doing a find and replace in Excel to put commas between things that were separated into columns - with SPIP you can combine columns easily. EXAMPLE: combine three columns into one — city, state and zip code — and put commas between City and State, and a space or two before zip codes. NOTE: SPIP cannot replace tabs with a "soft" carriage return. You can set your tabs to accomplish this by forcing material to the next line. Style information is not obtained from the Excel worksheet, but instead is set within SPIP. This insures that any style selection is "known" to the workstation using SPIP, and eliminates problems when the Excel file originates from a different organization with different settings for font, style, etc. | |
